Josbert makes Sabahan so proud!

A fellow Sabahan, Josbert Tinus broke Mohd. Zaki Sadri’s long standing long jump national record with a leap of 7.88m. Josbert managed the jump enroute to take gold at the Thailand Open in Bangkok recently. (and if you are asking, the picture on the left is not Josbert!, that's Saladino the current world champ)
The Korat Sea Games-bound Josbert’s effort was 3 centimetres better than Zaki’s old record of 7.85m as he added to Malaysia earlier gold by Lee Hup Wei’s in the high jump with a jump of 2.15m, which is way off the national record.
That's great! I am proud of him. From what I have read from the newspapers, Josbert is actually a late bloomer in the sport because he is only peaking at the age of 27. But what the heck, as long you are going great at it.
7.88meters is ASIAN standard aleady. Not many long jumpers in Asia can better that.
Only Saudi Arabia long jumper Hussein Al-Sabee, Li Runrun China, and Konstantin Safranov of Kazakh have jump consistently over 8m.
I really hope he will be the first Malaysian to break the magical mark of 8 METERS! That would rank him among the top 3 in Asia.
FYI, the gold medallist in the last World Championship in Osaka, Japan; Panamanian Irving Saladino won the men's long jump with a jump of 8.57m.
Couldn't find any pics of Josbert though.. :(

On the subject of long jumps, please check out my painstakingly researched blog post about the greatest long jump competition in history, which happened during the 1991 World Championships (Lewis vs Powell):

By the way, 2 long jumpers I've known personally is Alan Lerwill, whose PB is 7.98m and Chris Walker, whose PB is 7.60 (wind-aided).
